IADR Giddon Award for Distinguished Research in the Behavioral Sciences

The Executive Committee of the Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research Group of IADR announces the Giddon Award for Distinguished Research in the Behavioral Sciences. The Giddon Award for Distinguished Research in the Behavioral Sciences recognizes a single research investigation published, or accepted for publication, in the current calendar year or in the calendar year prior to the current one in the fields of social or cultural anthropology, education, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and social work applied to dentistry.  Both applied and basic research manuscripts are eligible.  The senior author receives the prize; however all of the authors are recognized.

This award is made possible by a contribution from Donald B. Giddon, D.M.D., Ph.D.  Dr. Giddon, a founder and former President of the BSHSR Group, established this award to recognize and highlight the contributions to dentistry from research in social and cultural anthropology, education, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and social work. He has been an active Group member since its creation, and continues to foster the integration of the behavioral sciences into oral health research and education. Dr. Giddon is Clinical Professor of Developmental Biology at Harvard University, Clinical Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois Chicago and Clinical Professor Emeritus of Community Health at the Brown University Medical School. He is also Clinical Professor of Epidemiology and Health Promotion at the NYU College of Dentistry, where he has served as Dean, and Clinical Professor of Children’s Dentistry, Stony Brook University, School of Dental Medicine. His most recent honor is the Certificate of Distinction in Teaching, Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, Harvard College.

The Award committee will accept self-nominations or nominations by others until December 1, 2015. The paper should be accompanied by a brief letter describing why it is deemed worthy of an award. Manuscripts accepted for publication but not yet published should be accompanied by a copy of the acceptance letter from the journal editor. Nominations will be acknowledged by email or in writing. Preferably, one of the primary authors for the manuscript selected for the award, will be present to accept the award, or someone on their behalf is expected to attend the award ceremony at the IADR General Session. The senior author will receive a cash award of $350, but all of the authors will be recognized.

Giddon Award deadline: December 1, 2015.
